When the particle count does not make sense.

Oil analysis · Guidance revision 8 October 2026

Investigate sampling, fluid formulation and measurement method before assuming the filter or the report is wrong.

Do not dismiss an alarm

Keep the equipment owner's response limits in force. An unexpected result still requires investigation. Review the asset history, sample identity, container handling and any change in fluid or test method.

Understand the measurement limitation

Filtertechnik describes cases where silicone-based antifoam additives affected light-blockage particle measurements. Bubbles and water can also complicate interpretation. Its examples concern particular fluids and instruments; they do not mean every high count is false.

Ask for a method check

Discuss fluid formulation and sample preparation with the laboratory. Where appropriate, request a repeat sample and a suitable independent method, such as image-based examination. Keep the original and follow-up reports together; do not select only the more favourable result.

Separate diagnosis from a filtration claim

A different instrument result is not evidence that a cartridge removed more contamination. Record the method and uncertainty before comparing trends. No monitoring instrument or automatic diagnosis is included with a Kleenoil cartridge purchase.
